Fishy Situation

Spring has been pretty sucky and the forecast is calling for several inches of snow tomorrow!! Yuck. However, the last few days of winter here were absolutely beautiful with temperatures in the 60’s and sunny skies. It was great to be able to get out of the house and be outside enjoying the weather.

Last Friday, was a beautiful day, although a little windy. We decided that it would be great to head down to the ocean with the entire fam and get some fresh air. The dogs loved it, Pinky loved it and so did Chris and I.

You may be wondering though why we selected the rockiest beach in town. You see, I had a slightly different agenda than just getting out to enjoy the warm day. Here’s the back story…

Recently, we realized that we need to relocate our fish tank to another location in the house because its current home in the office turned nursery was not going to work out. And because of the relocation, we needed to buy a new fish tank to fit the space better. I had hoped to be able to find something a little bit cooler than your standard, run of the mill rectangle aquarium, (like this on here) but the idea of spending a decent chunk of change on a home for 2 cheap goldfish was not very appealing. So, we opted for ( SURPRISE) a standard, run of the mill aquarium. And while at the pet store picking out our tank, I decided we need new rocks for it. Not those small stones that are a pain in the butt to clean and get stuck in everything, but something bigger, like river rocks. But once again, after checking out the river rock selection, I opted to forgo the $5 price tag for 4 small rocks. That just seemed like a bit too much.

Then a light bulb came on and I had the brilliant idea to just gather some stones from the beach. I put the fam to work collecting the smoothest, darkest stones while we were there. See, Chris even got to carry the pretty pink beach bucket!

And after some scrubbing and lots of boiling, our rocks were fish tank ready. We loaded them in and let the filter run for a few days before introducing the fishes to their new home. So far, so good. They seem to be satisfied and haven’t died yet from any sea related illnesses. (These are hardy goldfish though. You may remember that they survived the super long move from the midwest to the east coast in freezing temperatures!) I even took a short video of them in their new habitat. It isn’t anything too exciting, but you get the picture.
